Akash Bhora Surja Tara- Rabindranath Tagore
Sung by Uttam Kumar Bala
To help in getting a sense of what Tagore has said in Bengali, we found 3 renditions in English.
My heart sings at the wonder of my place
In this world of light and life;
At the feel in my pulse of the rhythm of creation
Cadenced by the swing of the endless time.
I feel the tenderness of the grass in my forest walk,
The wayside flowers amaze me:
That the gifts of the infinite are strewn in the dust
Wakens my song in wonder.
I have seen, have heard, have lived;
In the depth of the known have felt
The truth that exceeds all knowledge
Which fills my heart with wonder and I sing.
Transliteration by Tagore
Translation:
In a universe filled with stars and suns. Amidst them I have found my place. From this flows my song. The world spins in timelessness. In the ebb and flow of tides. I feel it’s draw in my body and in the flow of my blood (life force). Amidst it…I have made my footsteps through grassy paths and delighted by the fragrance of flowers… to walk as my heart desires.
The poet’s song flows from a connection with the larger universe inhabited by celestial bodies. The ebb and flow of the timeless and the splendour of the earthly plane are one.

The sky is full of the sun and the stars
The universe is full of life
Among all these I have found a place
And in wonder and amazement I sing.
The world is swayed
By eternity’s rushing tide
Rising and falling
I have felt its tug in my blood
Racing through my veins
And in wonder and amazement I sing.
While walking in the woodlands
With my feet I have touched the blades of grass
I have been startled by the flowers’ fragrance
They have all maddened my mind
The gifts of gladness and joy
Are strewn all around
And in wonder and amazement I sing.
I have pricked my ears
I have opened my eyes
I have bared my heart to the world
In the midst of the known
I have sought the unknown
And in wonder and amazement I sing
